«Tesoro escondido» así es como definiría a Semuc Champey. Ustedes se preguntarán «¿Adónde queda Semuc Champey?» Este lugar es un conjunto de posas de color turquesa en medio de un cañon de piedra caliza ubicado en el departamento de Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. En mi caso, salí de Cobán hacia Lanquín en donde tuvimos que hacer cambio de transporte (un pick up 4×4) porque son 9 kms en donde la calle es algo «brincadita».
Una vez llegas a Semuc Champey te das cuenta que estas en medio de montañas y que el silencio del lugar te envuelve. Debes pagar una cantidad simbólica para entrar a esta reserva. El lugar ofrece gratuitamente lockers para guardar los bolsos. Lo primero que hice al llegar fue subir al mirador. Hay dos caminos para llegar: uno es muy empinado y lo mejor es que lo utilicen personas en muy buenas condiciones físicas y el otro es un poco más sencillo pero con cierto grado de dificultad; sin embargo, no importa por cuál de los dos se decida subir, ambos llegan al mismo lugar y sin duda vale la pena la impresionante vista hacia las posas.
Una vez abajo en las posas, es posible bañarse, nadar o hacer unos clavados. Hay gente un poco imprudente que se sube a los árboles y desde ahí hacen sus clavados o panzazos. A unos cuantos pasos de las posas está el sumidero que es la caída del río en las piedras.
Entre las actividades que se realizan en este lugar y sus alrededores están: el tubing, la pesca y explorar cuevas. La opción por la que me aventuré fue entrar a las cuevas. Como requisito los guías del lugar piden que las personas sepan nadar pero también debes estar en buena condición física porque dentro de las cuevas además de nadar, debes escalar y hacer movimientos que requieren de mucho esfuerzo. Debes considerar que el agua te llega al cuello y que debes nadar con una mano porque con la otra llevas una candela encendida. ¡Ah sí, por cierto, la cueva está completamente oscura y lo único que la ilumina son las candelas que lleva el guía y las demás personas que van en tu grupo! ¡Así que si tienes claustrofobia o miedo a la oscuridad, mejor piénsalo más de dos veces antes de entrar! Si llegas a sentir que ya no quieres estar dentro de la cueva, solo le dices al guía para que te lleve de regreso.

“Hidden treasure” this is how I would define Semuc Champey. You are probably wondering where is Semuc Champey. Well, this place is composed of a group of turquoise natural pools in the middle of a limestone canyon located in the department of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. In my case, I traveled from Coban to Lanquín where I had to change to a four-wheeled drive pick-up because there are 9 kms of the road that are a little “bumpy”.
Once you get to Semuc Champey you realize that you are at the bottom of the canyon and that silence surrounds you because you are overwhelmed by all the beauty of the place. You must pay a fee in order to enter the reserve and there are free lockers that you can use so you keep your bags safe. I recommend you to go first to the viewpoint; there are two treks that you can choose from. One of them is very steep and it is suggested for people who are in excellent physical conditions. The other one is less demanding but still you must be in good conditions. No matter which trek you choose, both of them reach the same spot. Once you get to the viewpoint, you´ll see that it was worth the effort because the view is breathtaking!
When you descend back to the natural pools, go for a cool dive! People usually swim or they climb trees in order to let themselves fall to the pool from a higher point. Afterwards, you can go the “sumidero” which is where the river falls with all its force against some rocks and it´s just a few steps away from the pacific natural pools.
Among the activities that you can do in this place and its surroundings, you will find: tubing, fishing and cave exploration. The option that I decided to try was going into one of the caves. It is a requisite that you know how to swim and be in good physical condition because in the caves you not only have to swim but also climb slippery rocks. You must consider that inside the cave, the water can reach up to your neck and that you will swim only with one arm because with the other hand you are holding a lighted candle! Oh yes, by the way, the cave is completely dark and it´s only enlighten with the candles that the guide and the other people in your group are carrying. So… if you have claustrophobia or you are afraid of the darkness, you must think more than twice if you want to go into the cave. Nonetheless, if you panic in the middle of the “tour” you can ask the guide to take you back!
